Pinewood Derby Kits
While Pinewood Derby racing hasn't changed much since its invention by Don Murphy in 1953, the official kit has gone through a few changes.
First Generation
1953-1977
The block that came in the original kit was turned vertically with a deep cockpit and axle areas pre-cut. The wider axle holders were separate wooden pieces that were glued in. The wheels were narrow and the tread tapered. The suggested body design was a rounded car that resembled F1 racers of the 1930s.
Second Generation
1980-199X
In 1980, the official block was rotated to make it wider than it was tall, and the cockpit was cut more shallow. Axle slots just wide enough for the nail axles replaced the original separate axle design, and the wheels were widened and the tread flattened. The suggested body in the 1980s was a wedge.
Third Generation
199X-Today
The official kit underwent its most recent change sometime in the early-1990s. The cockpit was removed from the block altogether, the wheels got a smaller sidewall and larger spokes, and there is no longer a blueprint provided.
