Our Trail Life troop was a Boy Scout troop from 1961-2013, and we have a lot of old BSA stuff in storage. I was rummaging through it one day and came across this box from Beta Crafts - the official manufacturer of Pinewood Derby Kits from 1956-1998.

Inside the box were 14 kits, mostly unopened, ranging from the early to late 1980s. One of the kits caught my eye because of the price tag on the end flap. First, it only cost $1.19 when it was sold, but it's where it was sold that I thought was cool.
Pizitz was a Birmingham, Alabama-based department store founded in 1899, which had as many as 12 locations throughout the state until McRae's bought it in 1986. So this kit is no newer than 1986.
Now there is a middle school in our town named after its founder. It's where my son currently attends.
The first kit is from 1980-1986.
The second kit was introduced in 1988 and includes a mail order slip and an ad for Raingutter Regatta kits.
The box on the right was the first model to have a barcode on the box.
The big box also included a second-place medal, still stapled inside the bag with its original price tag of $2.45. The first photo is the medal I found; the other three are photos of an identical medal on eBay so I could post good photos without taking mine out of its package.
